Lawn-to-garden (turf replacement) program

$1 per square foot (250 to 25,000 square feet)

Lawn removal projects that transform grassy areas into water-wise gardens and landscapes are eligible for this rebate.

Cal Water will pay $1 for every square foot of living lawn that is transformed into a water-wise landscape.

  • The project must replace lawn with low water use, California-friendly, drought-tolerant landscaping; see Qualified Plants List for reference

  • A minimum of 250 square feet of living lawn must be removed

  • At minimum, 50% of the project area must be transformed into a water-wise landscape

  • Artificial turf is not allowed in the converted landscape area

  • This program is designed to save outdoor water use. If your lawn is dead at the time of submitting your application, you will not be eligible to participate in the program


Available for California Water Service (Cal Water) commercial customers in the following districts:

  • Bear Gulch

  • Dominguez

  • East Los Angeles

  • Hawthorne

  • Hermosa Redondo

  • Salinas

  • South San Francisco (Bayshore)

  • Stockton
